Chapel: Summer Sendings/Blessings, led by Inquiry Program students

This is our final chapel service of the school year. It will be led by students in the "Preparation for Inquiry Program" class. These students will be spending their summers in various ministry, service, and camp opportunities. They will be blessing us off to our respective summer plans, as well as a farewell to those graduating. EDITOR'S NOTE: This service includes moments of silence, it is not a problem with the recording.

Chapel: "A Less-Traveled Road for Christian College Students ..." by Brian McLaren, noted author and speaker

Many young adults feel torn between two options: a) preserve the traditional approaches to Christian faith which are available to them, or b) reject any active practice of the faith altogether. There is a third option: c) to explore and discover new ways of living and practicing the way of Jesus. In today's chapel, Brian McLaren will explore the strengths and weaknesses of all three options, and encourage students who feel so called to choose the third less-traveled road. Noted author and speaker Brian McLaren returns to Goshen College campus with his "Everything Must Change" tour. In this chapel service, he will give an overview of key themes to the upcoming 24-hour event held Friday evening through Saturday evening.

Join us for a special MONDAY chapel service focusing on the theme of Holy Week. As part of this worship service, there will be a time for you to come forward for anointing. Lent and Holy Week is a time to pause and reflect on our brokenness and that which is all around us. This chapel service will recognize those parts of ourselves and engage in singing, worship, prayers in ways that may foster a sense of hope and healing, particularly as we look toward Easter and the hope offered through a resurrected Jesus.

The Christian church contains many different denominational traditions, which emphasize different aspects of Christian life and different portions of the Bible. However, an increasing number of Christians find denominational divisions irrelevant at best and negative at worst. History professor John D.
Chapel: "Hymns Across Cultures" - Mary Oyer, retired faculty member

The music of a hymn grows out of a specific time and place and speaks best for those people who created and use it. But a group of worshipers can move beyond its own "sound pool" of favorites to embrace the treasures of other cultures. The result can deepen and enrich its understanding of worship at home and abroad. Join us for chapel today as retired faculty member Mary Oyer leads us in worship of God by engaging us in a variety of hymns.

Welcome to our first chapel of the second semester! Join us as we begin our semester in worship. President Jim Brenneman will share on "Choice Points" from Deuteronomy 30:15-20. There are those critical choices we all face, some of which are mundane without much consequence, others that seem routine, but are of great consequence. Let us learn to "listen to our lives" in the "quiet places" via our conscience, God's discernable voice, and other places as well.

            <itunes:summary>Our guest speaker for this week, Swana Sidonie, a Congolese theologian, was denied entrance into the United States. In light of this situation, chapel will be an opportunity for us to hear reflections from Marty Lehman and Rod Hollinger-Janzen about how U.S. State Department policies are affecting the global church and why we should care about building relationships with the African church, in particular. Join us for a service of African song, reflection, and prayer as we consider our place in the global church. We will have opportunity for everyone to sign a letter of support for Swana Sidonie, as well as letters of protest addressed to the State Department.</itunes:summary>

            <itunes:subtitle>"Why the Amish Forgave a Killer" - Professor Steve Nolt</itunes:subtitle>
            <itunes:summary>In October 2006, a local truck driver entered an Amish school in Nickel Mines, PA and shot many of the students, killing five girls and himself. For many people, the most shocking part of this incident was the forgiveness that the Amish community immediately offered to the killer's family. Goshen College history professor Steve Nolt is co-writing a book about the Amish and forgiveness with fellow scholars Don Kraybill and David Weaver-Zercher. It is scheduled to be released by Jossey-Bass press in October 2007.</itunes:summary>

</itunes:subtitle>
            <itunes:summary>Goshen College President James E. Brenneman called on students, faculty and staff Wednesday to embrace the college's core values and to work for the common good. Brenneman, speaking at the first campus convocation of the 2007-2008 academic year, proclaimed that the college's values have stood the test of time and been refined during its 113-year history in his speech "This we believe" Before Brenneman's remarks, Professor of Music Debra Brubaker led the audience in the singing of the college's alma mater as well as "Teach me thy truth," a hymn written more than 70 years ago by two Goshen College faculty members. The audience also enjoyed a slide and audio presentation in which members of the Class of 2007 shared their beliefs and described how they were influenced by Goshen College.</itunes:summary>
